chicago, the first lady michelle obama attending a funeral of a 15-year-old girl hadiya pendleton shot and killed not far from the obama home. she performed at the inauguration. the president sent a personal note to the family promising he will work hard to end the senseless violence. what's the status of gun control legislation which we know he'll talk about? >> one thing you'll see him mention is hadiya in the state of the union tuesday night and whole democrats will bring victims of gun violence into the chamber as guests tuesday including gabby giffords and it appears a consensus is starting to develop over the idea of expanding universal background checks even if you buy one at gun shows where it will be more difficult. it looks like the assault weapons ban is running into resistance even from democrats in the senate and there will be a big fight over whether or not to limit those high-capacity gun magazines where you see the focus of the fight going forward. >> the president is also going to be talking about taxes and looming across-the-board budget cuts. we're only weeks away fr

consoling loved ones today at the funeral for 15-year-old hadiya pendleton. the emotional service running nearly four hours. >> i wish we could see her beautiful smile again. >> because she will always be with us. >> reporter: and a mother in pain, stood strong. determined to halt gun violence. >> no mother. no father. should ever have to experience this. >> reporter: days before she became a national symbol to end gun violence, the standout student performed at the president's inauguration festivities. but hadiya's bright future came to a sudden end. she was one of more than 40 people murdered in chicago last month, the bloodiest january this city has seen in a decade. in a handwritten note to her family, president obama vowed to work to end this senseless violence. and the president has invited more than 100 victims of gun violence and their families to attend next week's state of the union address. the first lady also met with about 30 of hadiya's classmates and friends. many here now wondering if all of this attention from the first family will make the streets of chicago safe

parents of chicago murder victim hadiya pendleton are going to sit with the first lady tonight during the president's speech. two suspected gang members have now been charged in the 15-year-old honor student's death. police say it was apparently a case of mistaken identity. one of the suspects told them that a rival gang member was the intended target. >>> now to another case of deadly gun violence. bullets flying at a court house in delaware. witnesses say a man shot and killed two women as they approached the metal detectors of the county courthouse in wilmington. he also wounded two cops before he himself was fatally shot. one victim was the shooter's estranged wife. he had been involved in an ongoing child custody dispute. >>> a woman who looks like a regular old grandma is in a fair bit of trouble this morning. in some lighter news after all of that. >> oh, yeah. there she was in the atlanta courtroom in her prison jump suit, handcuffs. 79-year-old norma schifrin. she was busted last week. are you ready for this? trying to sell marijuana. >> inside her small home, police found ni

. one of those we lost was a young girl named hadiya pendleton. she was 15 years old. she loved fig newtons and lip gloss. she was a majorette. she was so good to her friends, they all thought they were her best friend. just three weeks ago, she was here, in washington, with her classmates, performing for her country at my inauguration. and a week later, she was shot and killed in a chicago park after school. just a mile away from my house. hadiya's parents, nate and cleo, are in this chamber tonight, along with more than two dozen americans whose lives have been torn apart by gun violence. they deserve a vote. they deserve a vote.
